Isla Caballo is an island located in the Gulf of Nicoya, home to around 350 people. While it has been inhabited for more than a century, these individuals do not have access to necessities such as a clean water supply, electricity, solid waste management, and more.
Although Costa Rica has 98% of water supply coverage, the only source of drinking water available to the inhabitants of Isla Caballo are two bottles of water per day, which are transported by boat. This effort is carried out by the National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AYA). These conditions add to the already damaging effects of climate change, where the amount of rainfall is at its lowest, reducing the availability of water for human consumption and use.
To provide clean water to the people of Isla Caballo, in May 2023, the EFL Global team in Latin America developed a project in support of Pacific Marine Park and UNA (a National University) with the goal of installing two Rainwater Harvesting Systems with 1,100 liters of capacity each. With the appropriate maintenance, these systems are projected to last more than 15 years. These systems collect rainwater, which is then channeled, filtered, and stored for later use.
This long-term Global Goodness project is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. SDG 6 demands access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for all. EFL Global is a member of the United Nations Global Compact and has aligned its business goals with many of the UN’s SDGs to ensure the logistics organization is doing its part to contribute to a sustainable future.
EFL Global in Latin America is committed to supporting sustainable projects in Isla Caballo to address the needs of the local community.
