Companies are increasingly recognizing the need to support biodiversity as part of their sustainability efforts. Biodiversity, essential for healthy ecosystems and human well-being, is under threat from deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Businesses can help preserve biodiversity by adopting sustainable practices.
EFL Global is focused on reducing emissions, supporting ecosystem restoration, and partnering with conservation organizations to drive these efforts. Here are ways companies can contribute, with examples of how EFL Global is leading the way.
1. Green Shipping Practices
Adopting green shipping practices is a keyway to lower environmental impact in logistics and support biodiversity by reducing climate change effects.
Green Delivery Services
EFL Global offers customers the option to offset shipments by purchasing carbon credits supporting a renewable energy project in India. We also optimize container space, provide backhauling, and offer low-emission multimodal options like rail or sea freight to further cut emissions.
Hub Consolidation
EFL Global reduces aircraft movements, increases shipment volumes, and eliminates transit stops through hub consolidations, cutting fuel use and emissions.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
EFL is exploring the use of SAF with airline partners to lower the carbon footprint of air freight. SAF, sourced from renewables, offers a greener alternative to traditional jet fuel.
2. Supporting Biodiversity Through Restoration and Marine Conservation Projects
Beyond emissions reduction, businesses can support biodiversity by engaging in restoration efforts to protect habitats and species. This includes efforts to conserve ecosystems on land and below water. At EFL, we have implemented ‘Global Goodness’ projects to ensure the sustainability of both these ecosystems – terrestrial and marine. Since its inception, EFL ‘Global Goodness’ has conducted many large-scale projects in multiple regions to support this cause.
Reforestation and Afforestation
Through our ‘Global Goodness’ initiative, EFL Global partners with organizations in Sri Lanka, India, and the Philippines to restore ecosystems and create wildlife habitats through reforestation and afforestation. Across all our restoration and afforestation projects, EFL has planted more than 150,000 saplings in multiple regions, aiding in increasing the forest cover of those areas.
For our flagship reforestation project in Sri Lanka, named ‘Revive Bundala’, EFL partnered with the Institute for Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences of a state university to conduct an impact assessment survey. Not only did this survey study the survivability of replanted trees, but also the social impact EFL had on the residents in the vicinity. This serves as an example of EFL’s commitment to quantifying the success of our efforts.
Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Restoration
EFL Global also supports projects in Nicaragua and El Salvador to restore marine ecosystems vital for biodiversity, climate regulation, and human livelihoods. These efforts included habitat restoration, marine protected area establishment, and coast conservation. To ensure our marine conservation projects are methodically conducted, they are aligned with UN SDG 14 – Life Below Water.
Over the years, EFL ‘Global Goodness’ projects have covered areas such as coast conservation, restoration of marine life and ecosystems, and creating awareness of the impact among EFL employees of the importance of healthy ecosystems. Sustainability is a collective effort, which is why EFL partnered with numerous conservation organizations in respective locations to support us in our endeavors, and to enhance the change we hope to institute.
